Supplying herds

Supply of Large Herbivores

The reintroduction of (half) wild or feral horses and bovids into often small nature areas requires much support. Especially in the beginning of a project. ARK mediates in the purchase of suitable herds. Rather than individual animals, we try to supply socially balanced herds, such as a complete Konik harem, a group of solitary stallions or a family group of cattle . Many terrain-owners would rather not become owners of the herds and therefore, ARK's animals can roam the area guarded by local supervisors. If required, ARK can also take care of providing information to the public. Of course, the terrain-owner can arrange this himself but, in any case, there must be proper information: no grazing without information. We try to involve them in the grazing project in the area they visit through field lessons, excursions, films and books.

Herd Fund

ARK established a Herd Fund to give supervisors of nature areas without resources the chance to have their terrain naturally grazed. This Fund can make complete herds available on certain conditions: the receiving party will be asked to participate in the collective herd for genetic exchange. ARK concluded Herd Fund contracts with nature organisations in the Flanders and Walloon provinces in Belgium, and in Latvia and Bulgaria.
